Autism insurance mandate

Medium confidence: reputable secondary source
State mandate for autism coverage

Yes, the research found a state autism coverage law.

Statute

RSMo 376.1224

Age limits

As of 2026-10-21, the statute text on revisor.mo.gov states ABA coverage applies through eighteen years of age; other required autism coverage is not subject to the age and dollar limitations.

Annual cap

The statute text sets a $40,000 base ABA maximum per calendar year for individuals through age 18. The Missouri Register notice (v51n4, page 317) publishes an adjusted 2026 maximum of $58,817 (calculated as the 2025 limit of $57,311 x 321.943/313.698), based on CPI-U. Carriers must adjust at least triennially. Coverage above the maximum is available with prior plan approval if medically necessary. The official FAQ is stale on the cap, and the $55,000 figure in older bill texts is not current law.

Excludes self-funded employer plans

It depends.

Notes

The statute reaches specified governmental, school-district and other arrangements to the extent not preempted by federal law. Federally preempted private self-funded ERISA plans are generally excluded. The January 1, 2020 date in the statute is the applicability date for the current text, not the original enactment date. Section 376.1224 does not address telehealth.
