The RBT fast track: an ideal-world timeline

Last researched October 21, 2026

If everything goes right, how quickly can a new behavior technician be registered and ready to start? Here is the fastest path the BACB rules allow, with the steps that can run at the same time shown side by side.

At a glance

Theoretical floor
approximately 23 days on a theoretical floor (5 + 1 + 1 + 14 + 1 + 1); this assumes next-day exam availability, which is unverified
Realistic planning range
about 4 to 6 weeks (28 to 42 days) is a reasonable planning estimate (analyst estimate, not a BACB figure)
Cost
BACB fees: $110. All-in: about 110 to 700+ depending on whether the employer provides training/ICA/background check (training vendor $29 to $375, ICA $0 to $150, background check unverified)

The timeline

Read top to bottom. Steps in the same row can happen in parallel.

  1. Phase 1 (in parallel)

    A. Background check + abuse registry check

    Minimum:
    1 day
    Typical (estimate):
1 to 7 (assumption; varies by vendor/state; fingerprinting may add time)
    Who pays:
Typically the employer (common industry practice, not BACB-sourced)

    B. 40-hour training

    Minimum:
    5 days
    Typical (estimate):
    5 to 14 for a full-time pace
    Cost:
    $0 (employer in-house) to about $375 vendor
    Who pays:
    Employer commonly; otherwise candidate

    D. Attestation form and BACB portal account setup

    Minimum:
    1 day
    Cost:
    $0
  2. Phase 2

    C. Initial Competency Assessment (after training completes)

    Minimum:
    1 day
    Typical (estimate):
1 to 5 (assumption; BACB sets no duration and allows multiple sessions, live-internet or recorded video; 3 tasks must be with a real client)
    Cost:
    $0 to ~$150 (low-confidence secondary)
    Who pays:
    Employer commonly
  3. Phase 3

    E. Submit application + $65 fee

    Minimum:
    1 day
    Cost:
    $65
    Who pays:
Candidate or employer; BACB does not specify
  4. Phase 4

    F. BACB application review

    Minimum:
    14 days
    Typical (estimate):
14 (BACB: 'allow two weeks'; queue-dependent, see BACB processing updates page); documentation errors add time
    Cost:
    $0
  5. Phase 5

    G. Schedule and sit the Pearson VUE exam ($45)

    Minimum:
    1 day
    Typical (estimate):
    unverified (test-center availability; assumption 3 to 14)
    Cost:
$45 (+$45 per retake; 7-day wait between attempts)
    Who pays:
    Candidate or employer
  6. Phase 6

    H. Pass notification and supervisor adds RBT as supervisee in BACB portal

    Minimum:
    1 day
    Typical (estimate):
    1 to 2
    Cost:
    $0

Critical path: B (5) -> C (1) -> E (1) -> F (14) -> G (1+) -> H (1) after A/D done in parallel

Who pays?

BACB sets no rule. Common industry practice (not BACB-sourced): employers sponsoring a new hire pay for training, ICA and fees. Candidate may pay if self-funding; the BACB account must be the candidate's own (employer must not manage it).

What to do while you wait

Before certification a new hire can complete onboarding, background checks, the 40-hour training and the ICA. Whether they may also shadow sessions, implement programs with a client (including as part of the ICA's required client tasks) or bill is state/payer dependent and needs a per-state check.

State-by-state caveats

Whether an unregistered BT may deliver services is set per state. This grid shows only answers we could verify. A dash means we could not verify it yet, so open the state page and check with the agency named there.
