This guide collects what we could verify about autism therapy work in West Virginia. Each fact shows how confident we are and links to its sources.

Start with the topic you need

The autism coverage law in West Virginia

W. Va. Code §33-16-3v (group accident and sickness insurers), §33-24-7k (hospital, medical, dental, and health service corporations), and §33-25A-8j (HMOs). Same subject for public programs: §5-16-7(a)(8) (Public Employees Insurance Agency) and §5-16B-6a (WVCHIP, incorporating the PEIA autism benefit). §5-16B-6e is repealed. Code pages list signed bills as enrolled committee substitute for H.B. 2693 (2011 Regular Session) and enrolled committee substitute for H.B. 4260 (2012 Regular Session). The insurance sections apply to policies delivered, renewed, or issued on or after January 1, 2012. See coverage details and sources.

Getting a new technician started in West Virginia

Because WV Medicaid and WVCHIP recognize only RBT-credentialed technicians, a new BT in WV effectively needs the RBT credential before billable Medicaid work; no state license is needed for the BT. Prior authorization must be in place before services start. (Our research note; confirm with the agencies on the BT vs RBT page.)
