ABA insurance and Medicaid coverage in Louisiana

Last researched October 21, 2026

Who pays for ABA in Louisiana, and what a practice has to do to bill them. Coverage details here come from statutes and agency pages we read, not from payer marketing.

Autism insurance mandate

Medium confidence: reputable secondary source
State mandate for autism coverage

Yes, the research found a state autism coverage law.

Statute

La. R.S. 22:1050; see also La. R.S. 22:1066.1 concerning annual and lifetime benefit limits.

Age limits

R.S. 22:1050 requires coverage for individuals younger than 21.

Annual cap

R.S. 22:1050(D)(1) states a $36,000 annual maximum for autism benefits. However, R.S. 22:1066.1 prohibits annual dollar limits on covered state-mandated and specified benchmark benefits for plans issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2020, subject to its exceptions for certain grandfathered individual coverage and limited-benefit policies. The $36,000 figure should not be treated as a universally enforceable current cap; plan-specific application remains unverified.

Excludes self-funded employer plans

Yes, self-funded employer plans are generally outside state mandates.

Notes

As of 2026-10-21, the legislature's published mandate applies to specified policies issued, delivered, renewed or contracted in Louisiana on or after January 1, 2014, including group insurance and Office of Group Benefits programs. It includes diagnosis and ABA within habilitative/rehabilitative care, prohibits visit-count limits, and permits medical-necessity review and ordinary cost sharing. It excludes individually underwritten guaranteed-renewable policies and limited-benefit policies. For ABA providers, subsection G(2) specifies BACB behavior-analyst certification or documented equivalent education, professional training and supervised experience; this provision does not establish technician billing eligibility. The self-funded exclusion refers generally to ERISA-covered employer plans, not every self-funded arrangement; governmental plans and MEWAs require separate analysis. The mandate expressly includes Office of Group Benefits programs. The DOL guide was revised April 2022; NAIC's ERISA explanation was updated July 22, 2025.
